Born Free Turns 60: A Magical Safari in the Kenyan Wilderness
Celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic film 'Born Free' with a journey to Kenya's Meru National Park, following in the paw prints of Elsa the Lioness.
Stars glimmer overhead, the opening credits roll and John Barry’s theme tune from the film Born Free fills the warm evening air, marking an outdoor movie screening unlike any other. This unique experience takes place on the lawn at Elsa’s Kopje, the only luxury safari lodge in Kenya’s Meru National Park, a wilderness where Elsa the Lioness, the star of Born Free, once roamed.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the film’s release. Based on Joy Adamson’s bestselling 1960 book, Born Free immortalized an orphaned cub that naturalists Joy and George Adamson hand-reared and subsequently released, introducing a generation to the majesty and intelligence of lions.
Watching the film's images flicker deep in the Kenyan bush is a poignant experience, especially with Elsa’s distant cousins roaming nearby. The journey aims to see Meru’s present-day lions face to face. At dawn, a safari sets out with Kikuyu guide Moses Muriithi, but nature redirects the morning's focus to rhinos.
Bumping along in a 4x4, the group soon spots a quartet of rhinos, described as placid creatures that approach so closely that every wrinkle in their hide is visible.
Later, encounters are made with the Meru-based team of Born Free, a conservation foundation established in Elsa’s honor. The team monitors Meru’s lion population, which currently numbers 79, and collaborates with the Kenya Wildlife Service to safeguard elephants and giraffes. These conservation efforts have reportedly made local poaching a thing of the past.
Hoping for a lion sighting elsewhere, the journey continues southwest to Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp in Mara North Conservancy, a prime area for big cats. Shortly after arrival, an encounter occurs with a group of juvenile lions lounging in the greenery.
During the stay, hundreds of animals are observed, including zebras, baboons, topi antelopes, and a cheetah. The safari concludes with the sighting of a group of playful lion cubs, described as a perfect, wild, and free safari moment, echoing the spirit of Elsa.
