Border Patrol officers discharged their firearms at a suspect wanted for grand theft auto who was attempting to flee into Mexico, according to reports.
The incident occurred Wednesday around 6:45 p.m. near the San Ysidro Port of Entry after the suspect led Riverside County Sheriff's deputies on a pursuit spanning approximately 120 miles from Jurupa Valley.
Video footage from the scene shows officers surrounding the suspect's vehicle and firing shots as the driver attempted to move past them. It remains unclear if the suspect sustained any injuries.
The pursuit caused traffic disruptions, leading to the closure of lanes on the southbound Interstate 5 on Camino De La Plaza. The San Ysidro border crossing was closed for approximately nine hours, with travelers advised to use the Otay Mesa crossing as an alternative.
The San Diego Police Department has stated that the California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the shooting.
Traffic at the border crossing has since reopened, and the lane closures have been lifted. The identity and condition of the suspect are currently unknown.
