Boomer Women Navigate Modern Dating Scene Amid Rising Divorce Rates
Divorces among older Americans have tripled since 1990, leading women over 60 to share experiences with dating apps, age-gap relationships, and political divides.
Divorces among Americans aged 65 and older have more than tripled between 1990 and 2023, a trend that has prompted many boomer women to re-enter the dating world and share their experiences. These stories highlight challenges such as ghosting on dating apps, encounters with younger men seeking financial support, and even breakups due to political disagreements.
Kristyne Haver, 69, from Reading, Pennsylvania, recounted meeting a Russian man 25 years her junior who was impressed by her Porsche Boxster. Her interest waned when he revealed his previous girlfriend paid him $1,000 per month. Haver now states she is only interested in men born when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, quipping, "You get the younger guys looking for what, a sugar mama or whatever?"
Lacey Wootton, 66, a retired American University professor, experienced frustration with dating apps after her divorce at age 50. She noted that habits previously attributed to younger generations, like ghosting, are prevalent among her age group as well. Wootton has since embraced single life, stating she is no longer actively seeking a partner but would consider one if they were "really amazing." She added, "Men age more than women, and I don't want to be a 72-year-old nursemaid."
Pearson Brown, 63, shared that her 10-year relationship ended due to irreconcilable political differences. What started as casual observations about the cost of groceries or gas escalated into political debates, making even simple interactions feel charged. She now uses dating app filters more judiciously.
According to research from Bowling Green State University, the divorce rate for those 65 and older has more than tripled since 1990, even as the overall divorce rate in the U.S. has declined.
Dating coach Amy Schoen, 66, advocates for online dating as the most effective method for boomers to meet potential partners. She advises clients to present their profiles as a "30-second infomercial" and to clearly state their relationship goals. Schoen emphasized that "Eighty percent of my successful clients have met through online dating." She also noted that clients with a "sense of adventure" tend to have more positive experiences.
However, Schoen cautioned against online dating scams, advising caution if potential partners refuse to meet in person or via video call, or if they initiate financial discussions early on.
