Booker Prize Nominee Credits Teachers for Fostering Creativity

Luke Kennard, whose novel "Black Bag" earned a nomination for the prestigious Booker Prize, credits his former teachers at Holyrood Academy in Chard for significantly influencing his creative development. The book itself is based on an experimental premise involving an actor situated in a bin bag at the rear of a lecture hall.

Kennard reflected on his childhood, stating that he had "quite a lot of time to practice" his creative pursuits. He emphasized the profound impact educators can have, particularly when they identify and encourage a student's passion. "It just can't be exaggerated how much difference a teacher can make when they find a kid who has a passion for their subjects," he said.

Growing up in what he described as a quiet town, Kennard noted that this environment contributed to his "creative impulse." He explained that periods of boredom could foster creativity, leading him to focus on activities like playing the clarinet or writing poetry. Kennard attended Holyrood Academy between 1992 and 1999, studying English Literature for both GCSE and A-level.

He specifically mentioned the encouragement he received for his writing from his teachers as being "quite foundational." Paul Coffman, the former head of English at the academy, would reportedly read Kennard's short stories during break times and offer feedback through notes. Kennard stated that Coffman was the first person who inspired him to "take my writing seriously."

Holyrood Academy expressed its delight regarding Kennard's Booker Prize nomination. The school acknowledged his praise for Coffman as a "moving reminder of the lasting impact teachers can have on the lives and achievements of their students." A statement from the academy concluded, "This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to Luke's talent, dedication and love of literature. We couldn't be prouder."

The winner of the 2026 Booker Prize is scheduled to be announced on November 9.
