Bonnie Greer, Acclaimed British-American Playwright, Dies at 77

Bonnie Greer, the celebrated British-American playwright, author, critic, and commentator, has died at the age of 77 following a brief illness.

Her husband, David Hutchins, announced her passing, stating, "Bonnie was an acclaimed playwright, author, critic, cultural and political commentator whose intelligence, courage and distinctive voice made an enduring contribution to British cultural and public life." He added, "To me, she was my partner, confidante and inspiration, and I feel profoundly privileged to have shared my life with her." He also noted that those closest to Greer will remember her "warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary ability to bring people together" and requested privacy for the family during this difficult time.

Born in Chicago, Greer lived in New York City before relocating to Britain in 1986, where she later became a citizen in 1997. Her prolific career included numerous literary achievements.

She received the Verity Bargate Award for Best Play for her work "Munda Negra." Her novels include "Hanging by Her Teeth" (1994) and "Entropy" (2009). In 2009, she published "Obama Music," a memoir and music history. Other notable works include the biography "Langston Hughes: The Value Of Contradiction" (2011) and the play "Marilyn And Ella" (2008), which explored the lives of Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald.

Greer's contributions extended beyond her writing. She was appointed to the British Museum's board of trustees in 2005, eventually serving as deputy chairwoman. Her civic engagement also included roles on the boards of the Royal Opera House and the London Film School. In 2022, she was appointed a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Known for her sharp intellect and engaging presence, Greer was a frequent panellist on television programs such as "Newsnight Review" and "Question Time." She also served as the Chancellor of Kingston University in southwest London.

In recognition of her significant impact on the arts, Greer was appointed an OBE in 2010.
