A bomb squad responded Wednesday to Turning Point USA's headquarters in Phoenix after a "suspicious bag" was reported outside the building, Phoenix police said.

Officers cleared the street outside the nonprofit's office and deployed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal robot and a technician in an EOD suit to investigate, a police spokesperson told reporters. Yellow police tape and department vehicles were visible at the scene. "There is not a threat associated with this incident. Updates will be given out as they become available," authorities said.

The response came as Phoenix prepares to host the funeral for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot last week while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Kirk, 31, died after being shot in the neck during the event; a funeral is scheduled for Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, home of the Arizona Cardinals.

Turning Point USA, the conservative activist group Kirk co-founded, has seen growing public tributes since his death. A memorial outside the organization's Phoenix headquarters has drawn visitors; police said a 19-year-old man was arrested after damaging items at one tribute site and was charged with criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

The Phoenix Police Department and Turning Point USA were contacted for additional comment, police said. Authorities did not disclose whether the unattended bag contained any items or what, if anything, was recovered. No further details on the investigation were provided.

Kirk rose to prominence through campus events and debates in which he challenged liberal students on issues including abortion and gun control. He founded Turning Point USA with mentor Bill Montgomery, who provided early funding and guidance for the organization and died in 2020.

Police said the scene was secured as a precaution and emphasized there was no continuing threat. Investigators said they would provide updates when more information became available.
