Bodycam Footage Shows Arrest and Strip Search of Man Accused of Killing Healthcare CEO
Newly released video captures the moments Luigi Mangione was apprehended and searched in Pennsylvania following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
Newly released bodycam footage details the arrest and strip search of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. The videos, unsealed by a judge after a petition from CNN, show officers questioning Mangione inside a Pennsylvania McDonald's and subsequently searching his belongings.
Authorities apprehended Mangione on December 9, 2024, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, approximately 300 miles from New York City. The arrest occurred five days after Thompson, a 50-year-old executive, was shot and killed as he was walking to a hotel for his company's annual investor conference.
In the footage, officers approach Mangione, who is wearing a ski hat and face mask. They question him about his identity and inquire if he has been in New York recently. After presenting a fake New Jersey driver's license, Mangione is warned about providing false information. Eventually, he identifies himself, and officers proceed to read him his rights and place him in handcuffs.
During a search at the police station, officers discovered a 9mm handgun, a silencer, and an additional ammunition magazine in Mangione's backpack. These items were later confirmed by authorities to be the weapons used in the killing. Investigators also found a journal containing notes that prosecutors allege revealed Mangione's intent to harm a health insurance executive, along with a checklist for his activities.
Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in August to federal stalking charges and faces a potential life sentence. He has also been charged with murder in New York state court, though those proceedings are currently postponed. His sentencing for the federal charges is scheduled for December 18.
During his August court appearance, Mangione testified that years of severe back pain and frustration with the healthcare insurance system motivated his actions. He explained that he learned about UnitedHealthcare's investor conference in New York and posed as an investor to gather information. Mangione stated that he traveled to Manhattan in November 2024, used a 3D printer to create part of a gun, and equipped it with a silencer and magazine. He admitted that his intent in traveling to New York and contacting UnitedHealthcare was to shoot Brian Thompson. He concluded his statement by saying, "On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died."
