Police bodycam footage has emerged that appears to contradict claims made by former NFL reporter Dianna Russini regarding a traffic stop in Ridgewood, New Jersey, earlier this year. Russini had stated that she avoided a ticket for using her phone while driving by FaceTiming a coach whose favorite team she allegedly identified. However, the newly released footage shows no such FaceTime call occurred.
During the stop on January 19, Russini was pulled over for using her phone while operating her vehicle. According to the bodycam video, Russini did not FaceTime any coach. Instead, she informed the officer that she was an NFL reporter and had just broken the news of Sean McDermott's firing from the Buffalo Bills. She explained her use of the phone was work-related and urgent.
Interaction with Officer
The officer noted that Russini had been on her phone for an extended period before being stopped. Russini then mentioned that former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was interested in the Bills' coaching position. The officer identified himself as a Minnesota Vikings fan. In response, Russini reportedly showed the officer text messages on her phone, which included communications with Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell. During this exchange, Russini made comments about the Vikings' quarterback and O'Connell.
The conversation concluded with the officer issuing Russini a verbal warning, citing her job requirements and advising her to use her phone only when safely parked. Ridgewood Police Chief Forest Lyons stated that the officer exercised professional discretion in issuing a warning, which aligns with department policy for fair and impartial policing.
Russini's interactions with NFL personnel have drawn public scrutiny. She resigned from her position at The Athletic in April following controversy surrounding her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Photographs of them together at a private resort had surfaced, leading to criticism. Further images reportedly showed them kissing at a New York City bar in March 2020.
Vrabel, meanwhile, returned to the Patriots after counseling and addressed the situation with his family and players. The Patriots organization stated they fully supported Vrabel throughout the period.
