Body of Missing Hiker Found in Olympic National Park

The body of Neil Gehring, a 26-year-old hiker who had been missing for nearly two weeks in Washington state’s Olympic National Park, was recovered on Sunday, September 13. The discovery was made possible by a critical clue: additional cellphone location data that helped narrow the search.
Search and rescue teams found Gehring on the northwest slope of Mount Appleton. His body was transported to the Clallam County Coroner’s Office. The National Park Service has not released details regarding the circumstances of his death or the specifics of the cellphone data that proved instrumental in the search.
Gehring had embarked on an overnight backcountry trip on August 31, departing from the Madison Falls Trailhead. His permit indicated a planned cross-country route from Boulder Lake to Appleton Pass, with an expected return to the trailhead by September 1. He was reported overdue the following morning.
Initial search efforts, which spanned 10 days, involved ground and air teams, drones, and dogs scouring Gehring's intended route. By September 11, the park shifted its strategy, focusing on gathering new clues after the extensive searches failed to locate him. The park service also appealed to the public for any information from individuals who had been in the area.
Two days after altering the search strategy, the crucial cellphone data was analyzed, leading to the discovery of Gehring's location. The National Park Service expressed gratitude to the volunteer search-and-rescue teams who assisted in the operation.
