Body of 11th Woman Found in South Africa Amid Fears of Serial Killer

South African police announced Monday that the body of an 11th woman has been discovered in Ekurhuleni, a municipality east of Johannesburg, intensifying fears that a serial perpetrator or perpetrators may be responsible for a recent spate of killings. The discovery occurred in Springs, where a private security company found the victim's body on Sunday.

The series of discovered female bodies in the Ekurhuleni area, which began in July, has ignited public anger in a country that already grapples with high rates of femicide and violence against women and children.

Authorities initially launched an investigation after three women's bodies were found in July and August within a roughly 4.3-mile radius in Ekurhuleni. The discovery of six bodies over a 10-day period earlier in the month further fueled concerns about a serial killer.

The latest discovery followed the finding of another woman's body near Tembisa township just a day prior. Details surrounding the 10th victim, found early Saturday, remain limited, and the victim has not been immediately identified.

In connection with the killing of one woman whose body was found in Ekurhuleni, a 36-year-old suspect was arrested. He is scheduled to appear in Tembisa Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Police allege the suspect fled to Tzaneen, in Limpopo province, nearly 245 miles away, after the killing and was apprehended on Saturday evening, the same day the body was discovered.

Last week, two women were brought before the courts in relation to the death of one of the victims discovered since July. Their next court appearance is scheduled for October 1.
