Rescuers in Passaic, New Jersey, continue to search for a 10-year-old girl after her brother's body was recovered from the Passaic River late Wednesday night. The search efforts are being challenged by high water levels resulting from recent storms.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora told reporters that the body of the 10-year-old boy was found near Veterans Court, an area close to a local park. The mayor expressed hope that the girl might still be found alive, suggesting the brother may have helped push her to safety before succumbing to the river's current.

Calls reporting three children in the water came in around 6:20 p.m. local time Wednesday. A bystander attempted to help the children but was unsuccessful. Search and rescue operations were ongoing into Thursday morning, involving the Passaic Police Department, the Passaic County Sheriff's Office, and the New Jersey State Police.
