Body Language Expert Analyzes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's UK Appearance
Expert Judi James suggests the Duke and Duchess of Sussex displayed 'inner tension and caution' alongside outward 'joyful return' during their recent Nottingham engagements.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exhibited body language that suggested they were "clinging together as survivors" during their first official engagements in the UK since stepping back from royal duties, according to body language expert Judi James.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Nottingham, a city where they previously made their first public walkabout after announcing their engagement in 2017. Their recent visit included engagements with local charities.
During the appearances, Meghan accepted bouquets from well-wishers and expressed that it was "great to be back." Prince Harry, meanwhile, was observed repeatedly placing a protective arm around her, particularly as they posed for selfies. James noted that this "protective wing" gesture, with his fingers digging tightly into Meghan's shoulder, indicated "inner tension and caution."
When Meghan reciprocated by placing her arm around Harry's waist, the expert described the combined actions as a "double-cling," reinforcing the impression of the couple holding together as survivors. James suggested that while the Sussexes aimed to project a message of a "joyful return," Harry's body language also conveyed underlying tension and a desire to protect his wife.
James further observed that their "wide-open-mouthed smiles of delight" resembled a performance for an "ecstatic audience." She pointed to Meghan's facial expressions during conversations with the crowd, suggesting a display of relief and reassurance. Harry's "flattened palm 'Hail' gesture" was interpreted as an attempt to acknowledge the public's acceptance and affection.
However, James also identified signs of unease. During an acting workshop, Meghan was seen wrapping one arm around her torso in a self-embrace, while her other hand was raised in what the expert termed a "broken wing" gesture, a sign of vulnerability. James interpreted a micro-expression in Meghan's eyes as she looked at Harry to be one of fear or worry, suggesting "less confident leakage" beneath their outward displays.
Approximately 100 fans gathered to greet the couple. Meghan engaged with fans, shaking hands and taking selfies. The engagements included visits to charities such as the Community Recording Studio, a community food project, and a charity offering sports mentoring.
Nottingham holds significance as the location of their first joint royal walkabout. However, a source indicated that Meghan now views herself as a "full-time mum and entrepreneur" rather than a working royal, and such public appearances will be infrequent. Her focus is reportedly on her family, her business ventures, and a potential return to acting, while Prince Harry prioritizes his philanthropic work.
Meghan is reportedly planning to launch her brand, As Ever, in the UK by the end of the year. The couple's differing professional priorities—Harry's in public service and Meghan's in business and family—were also noted.
