The family of a British man missing in Colombia have been told that a body found in the country is believed to be him. Anton Green, 43, from Manchester, had been living in Colombia for two and a half years when he stopped responding to messages in August.

His family received the news of the discovery just hours after renewing their appeal for help in finding him. They told the BBC that the news had devastated them and that they were "trying to come to terms with what's happened."

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that the body of a British national had been found in Colombia and that support was being provided to the family.

Green's family had previously described his disappearance as out of character. His mother, Nylva McKie-Williams, stated that his last communication with her in August was that they would speak at the weekend, and that he had always maintained frequent contact. "It had been so unlike him not to be in contact with us," she told BBC North West Tonight.

Footballer Marcus Rashford had also joined the appeal to find Green, referring to him as a "family friend." Green's brother, Ro-Shaun Williams, had been part of the Manchester United youth team alongside Rashford.

Anton Green's sister, Sian Tuohey, described her brother as a "happy, decent guy" who had moved to Colombia three years prior while traveling and had settled there, learning to speak Spanish fluently. He had recently relocated to the Fontibon area of the capital, Bogota.

Police informed his relatives of the discovery in the early hours of Thursday. His family is awaiting further information from the Attorney General's Office in Bogota.
