Bob Mackie's Official Cause of Death Revealed as Blunt Head Trauma After Fall

Iconic fashion designer Bob Mackie died from blunt head trauma and a subarachnoid hemorrhage following a fall at a Palm Springs residence, according to his death certificate. The certificate, obtained by Us Weekly, contradicts earlier statements from Mackie's representative that cited pneumonia as the cause of his death. Mackie passed away on September 14 at the age of 87.

Mackie sustained the injury while staying at the home of his longtime Design Director, Joseph McFate, several days before his death. A healthcare professional was present when he fell. The subarachnoid hemorrhage, described as bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues that cover it, was a consequence of this fall.

Mackie's team confirmed his passing in a statement shared on Instagram, noting that he "lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer." The statement also mentioned that he "was also suffering from pneumonia both before and after his hospitalization."

Mackie's remains were cremated on September 17, and his ashes were spread at sea off the coast of San Diego. He was renowned for his flamboyant and elaborate costumes, particularly for Cher, earning him the nickname "Sultan of Sequins." His career also included designing for other stars such as Carol Burnett, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, and Diana Ross. Mackie was a 32-time Emmy nominee and a three-time Oscar nominee for his costume design work in films like "Lady Sings the Blues" and "Funny Lady." He also designed for numerous stage productions throughout his career.
