Manuel Hernandez, 46, the captain of a boat that capsized in New York Harbor, killing a woman and her five-month-old daughter, has been released on a $50,000 bond. Hernandez was seen for the first time since the incident on Monday afternoon.
The boat capsized around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, leading to the deaths of Sara Sanchez, 27, and her daughter, Antonella Garcia. Hernandez was treated for minor injuries at a Brooklyn hospital on Sunday before being transferred to federal custody.
Initially facing 13 state charges of reckless endangerment, these charges are no longer being pursued as a federal investigation takes precedence. New charges are expected to be announced as early as Monday, according to sources.
