Bluefin Tuna Leaps Near Surfers in Cornwall

Video footage has documented a large bluefin tuna leaping from the ocean near surfers at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. The incident occurred last Tuesday during a surfing class.

The striking visuals show the predator submerging into the water to catch a mackerel that had itself jumped from the sea moments earlier. The event has been described as a 'feeding frenzy'.

Jacob Waller, 23, manager of Newquay Activity Centre, captured the video. Responding to suggestions that the footage was fabricated, Waller confirmed its authenticity. "It's a real video," he stated. "We filmed it just before lunchtime down at Fistral Beach, capturing the insane moment a bluefin tuna leaps out of the water capturing this mackerel in its mouth."

He added, "There was a bit of a feeding frenzy going on. It was an insane moment. We've been inundated with comments about it."

Waller noted that bluefin tuna are present in British waters from mid-summer to late autumn. The fish are among the largest and fastest marine predators and have become more frequently observed along the British coast. This resurgence follows a period of absence in the 1990s and is attributed to international conservation efforts that helped depleted stocks recover from overfishing. The increased presence is particularly noted around Cornwall, where the tuna can follow prey shoals close to shore.
