A recent blind date between Jemma, a 41-year-old cyber security consultant, and Patrick, a 49-year-old IT network engineer, highlighted stark differences in expectations and perspectives, particularly concerning traditional gender roles and education.
The date, recounted in a Daily Mail feature, began with initial impressions that quickly soured for Jemma. While Patrick noted Jemma's smile and that her hair color suited her, he also stated he prefers women with "a bit more meat on them." Jemma, in turn, found Patrick unattractive and noted his height discrepancy with her own estimate. "Patrick didn’t pay me a compliment," she recalled.
Conversation during the date revealed significant points of contention. Jemma mentioned growing up in care and leaving school with two GCSEs. Patrick's reaction was, in her words, "utterly disrespectful," stating, "Wow! That’s poor." He later commented, "That’s why your education is so poor, then," when Jemma explained her upbringing.
Jemma countered by highlighting her professional achievements, including being named one of the most Influential Women in Tech twice. She believes Patrick is looking for "a more traditional-housewife-type who isn’t his equal."
Patrick, who was previously in an arranged marriage that ended quickly, expressed his own specific dating preferences. "I’m not interested in a woman who doesn’t want to cook," he stated, indicating he seeks a partner who is patient and can cook. He also commented on Jemma being vegetarian, noting she would need to be open to him eating meat.
Regarding their educational backgrounds, Patrick spoke about being sent to boarding school, while Jemma noted her less formal educational path due to her upbringing. Jemma found Patrick's comments about her GCSEs to be rude and opinionated.
Despite Jemma's negative experience, rating the date 2/10, Patrick gave it a 7/10. He felt Jemma warmed up to him throughout the lunch and that there was a "romantic vibe towards the end." He suggested seeing her again for coffee, though he did not ask for her number directly. Jemma, however, unequivocally stated she would "absolutely not" see him again, expressing a desire to give him feedback on his manners.
Both individuals shared their views on the current dating scene, with Jemma expressing concern about women accepting dates from men who misrepresent themselves online, while Patrick finds women to be "so picky" and unwilling to overlook imperfections.
