Blake Shelton Shares Final Heartfelt Conversation with Late Country Star John Anderson

Blake Shelton recounted his final, poignant conversation with fellow country music artist John Anderson, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71. Anderson's representatives confirmed his death at his home in Smithville, Tennessee, though the cause has not yet been announced.

Shelton, who had collaborated with Anderson on several songs, shared his grief and reflections on Instagram. "There is too much for me to say about @johnanderson in just a statement. I am sick and I am stunned. But I am a very lucky man," Shelton wrote. "I got the opportunity to find out that my hero wasn’t just the guy I hoped he’d be. He was so much more than that. John was my friend."

He added, "I got to see him last Sunday and I don’t even know why but I told him I loved him. That is what fills my heart in this moment. My love and prayers go out to John’s family. This one really hurts."

Gwen Stefani, Shelton's wife, also paid tribute to Anderson in the comments of Shelton's post. "thank you for introducing our family to such a Legend -a one-of-a-kind voice," she wrote. "His music is part of our family's hearts forever!! Gx." She emphasized that Anderson "will always be part the soundtrack of music that defines who our family."

Anderson, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, was known for hits such as "Swingin'" (1983) and "Straight Tequila Night" (1991). His career began gaining momentum after signing with Warner Bros. Records in 1976, and he continued to release a steady stream of singles throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

His family announced his passing on Instagram, stating, "To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more. He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special." They added, "His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever."

Anderson had spoken in 2020 about health challenges he faced, including significant hearing loss in 2017-2018, which he said nearly ended his career. He credited prayer for his hearing's eventual return.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and daughters Alexa and Brionna, along with their relatives. Anderson's final public appearance was at the CMA Theater on Sunday at the Country Music Hall of Fame's 2026 Medallion Ceremony.
