Bishop of Lincoln Resigns Amid Sexual Assault Inquiry
The Right Reverend Stephen Conway will formally step down on October 1, with an investigation into a safeguarding complaint still ongoing.
The Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Stephen Conway, has resigned amid an ongoing investigation into an allegation of sexual assault. His resignation will formally take effect on October 1, the Church of England confirmed.
Conway was arrested in February following a "safeguarding complaint." Lincolnshire Police stated at the time that the arrest was part of an investigation into an allegation that a man was sexually assaulted between 2018 and 2025.
Following Conway's resignation, the Church announced that Dr. Nicholas Chamberlain, the Bishop of Grantham, will continue to serve as the Acting Bishop of Lincoln until a permanent successor is appointed. Clergy remain subject to church disciplinary procedures even after resignation or retirement, according to the Church of England statement.
