Birthday Party Invitation Sparks Online Debate Over Uninvited Siblings

A disagreement over uninvited guests at a child's birthday party has ignited a debate online after a mother was left $111 out of pocket. The situation arose when the mother invited all the boys in her son's class to a celebration at Lazer Tag but received a request from one parent to bring two additional children.

Initially confused, the mother realized the parent might have twins in the class. However, she felt uncomfortable with the idea of accommodating a third sibling beyond the invited child, especially since the party was a significant expense. "We only do a birthday party every other year because it is insanely expensive," she explained.

The mother communicated her stance to the other parent via text, stating, "We have a booking but I can call and add two more if you want to pay the additional cost of 74 (37×2)." She noted that she had previously allowed siblings at parties when necessary but had always made the additional costs clear upfront.

Despite her attempt to remain polite, the mother's husband found her request "extremely rude." Nevertheless, the parent confirmed that all three of her children would attend and agreed to the $74 payment. However, an hour after the party began, the parent announced that the siblings would not be attending after all.

This turn of events left the host mom with the bill for the extra children, totaling $111 after the reservation was changed based on the expectation that all three would attend. She later shared her experience on Reddit, seeking advice.

Online reaction was divided. Many users sided with the host mom, deeming her request reasonable and criticizing the other parent's "audacity." Others, however, found the act of asking for money "tacky," suggesting it would have been better to simply decline the additional guests or state that the party had a strict capacity limit.

Some commenters questioned the expense of the party itself. The host mom defended the cost, explaining that venue parties at places like Lazer Tag or Chuck E. Cheese are typically priced at that level. A recent survey indicated that Australians are spending an average of $1118 on children's birthday parties.
