Birmingham New Street Station to Close for Five Days for £13 Million Upgrade
The UK's busiest station outside London will suspend all services from December 24 to 28 for essential engineering work on its overhead power lines.
Birmingham New Street station, a critical hub for rail travel, is set to close for five days during the Christmas period to undergo a significant upgrade. From December 24 to December 28, no train services will operate to or from the station, impacting an estimated 140,000 daily passengers.
The closure is necessary for Network Rail to commence work on the station's overhead power lines, a vital component for electric train operations. The extensive £13 million project will focus on replacing wiring on the lines approaching and within the station, much of which dates back to the 1960s. This work is the first phase of a three-year program aimed at improving the long-term reliability of the rail network.
Birmingham New Street station itself will remain open to the public, providing access to shops, amenities, and the city center. Staff will be available, and facilities such as toilets and the assisted travel lounge will be accessible.
Network Rail Route Director Martin Colmey acknowledged the disruption, stating, "There is never a good time for this type of work and we have done all we can to reduce its impact as much as possible. Christmas is a quieter time but we know it will affect journeys at an important time of the year." He emphasized that early notification is intended to help passengers plan their travel well in advance.
Services are scheduled to resume on December 29. Passengers are advised that journeys may take longer during the upgrade period, and alternative transport arrangements, such as rail-replacement buses or local bus services, may be necessary.
