BioWare, the acclaimed video game studio behind the science fiction series Mass Effect and the fantasy saga Dragon Age, has closed its doors after 31 years. The Canadian developer, renowned for its intricate, branching narratives in role-playing games, was founded in 1995 and garnered millions of fans.

Parent company Electronic Arts (EA) announced the studio's closure as part of a broader workforce reduction affecting 400 jobs across the company. EA stated that the decision to close BioWare was made after a review of its business, leading to a focus on fewer, large-scale projects. The company confirmed that work is continuing on a new Iron Man game and a Star Wars Jedi title, as well as two EA Sports projects, including a "social-first" American Football game code-named "Project Gridiron." Efforts are also underway to revive the boxing simulator Fight Night, and EA remains committed to the long-term success of Skate and The Sims. However, one new Sims project has been canceled, and job cuts are planned at Skate developer Full Circle.

In a statement, BioWare expressed gratitude to its players, calling them "the most important part of the story" throughout its 31-year history. The studio had been working on a new Mass Effect game.

BioWare first achieved significant success in 1998 with the release of Baldur's Gate, a role-playing game based on Dungeons and Dragons rules. The studio earned a reputation for quality, and in the late 2000s, it experienced major successes with the Mass Effect trilogy and several Dragon Age titles. The Mass Effect series, in particular, is recognized for its lasting impact on the video game industry, noted for its ambitious storytelling and the inclusion of same-sex relationships.

As industry trends shifted, BioWare transitioned from single-player to multiplayer games with the 2019 release of Anthem, which received disappointing reviews from fans and critics. Its most recent release was Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, the fourth installment in the series. The game's extended development cycle was cited as a contributing factor to its lukewarm reception, with many long-time fans expressing disappointment that it lacked the complex moral choices characteristic of its predecessors.

Electronic Arts, a major video game publisher responsible for franchises such as EA FC, The Sims, and Battlefield, was acquired for $55 billion by a consortium of investors led by Saudi Arabia in a deal that also involved EA assuming $20 billion in debt.

EA described BioWare as "a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly."
