Billy Joel Shares Health Update Following Surgery for Rare Brain Condition

Billy Joel, 77, has provided an update on his health following surgery for a rare brain condition. The singer-songwriter reassured fans during a call-in on his SiriusXM show, The Billy Joel Channel, stating that he is now doing "fine."

Last month, Joel revealed he had undergone a procedure to alleviate symptoms associated with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a disorder that can affect hearing, vision, and balance. He told listeners that while the condition sounds serious, "it's a lot worse than it actually is."

"I'm okay," he said, acknowledging that his "balance isn't that good" and that he has "lost a little bit of [his] hearing." He attributed some hearing loss to age and years of performing at loud volumes.

Joel was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in May 2025. The condition occurs when the ventricles in the brain enlarge due to a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid, potentially impacting walking, memory, and bladder control, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Following his diagnosis, Joel canceled concerts and was advised by doctors not to perform until he recovered. He underwent brain shunt surgery, a procedure designed to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid and potentially mitigate symptoms. The surgery, which typically takes about two hours, involves implanting a shunt to redirect fluid, usually to the abdomen.

Joel indicated that doctors had informed him that performing concerts was akin to experiencing "something like a concussion every time I did a show" and that he risked "losing more brain cells the more shows I did." This realization led him to decide against performing for the time being.

"They don't want me to stress too much, so I'm doing physical therapy. I'm doing whatever it is they tell me to do," he stated.

He described his condition prior to the surgery, noting a constant "rocking motion" and feeling unsteady on his feet. Since the surgery, Joel reported that his memory has improved, his balance is better, and his overall ability to function has increased.

Joel isn't ready to return to the stage, with doctors telling him to take it easy following the diagnosis and surgery. He ids pictured in December 2023
