Billy Joel's Health Restrictions: Doctors Advise Against Driving and Performing Due to Brain Condition
The iconic musician reveals his battle with normal pressure hydrocephalus has led to medical restrictions impacting his ability to drive and perform live shows.
Musician Billy Joel, 77, has disclosed that doctors have advised him to refrain from driving and performing due to ongoing health issues related to a brain condition. Joel revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he is currently not permitted to drive.
Doctors have also stipulated that Joel must undergo a series of tests before he can resume public performances. He explained that neurologists have indicated that the combination of loud sound, bright lighting, stress, and the energy exerted during a show can be akin to sustaining a concussion each time he performs.
Joel stated that he is dealing with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition previously referred to as "water on the brain." He elaborated that the disorder primarily affects balance, memory, vision, and hearing, but reassured fans that he is "OK" and that the condition is "not that serious."
In addition to health updates, Joel discussed his decision to auction off a significant portion of his motorcycle collection next month. Having accumulated over a hundred motorcycles, he noted that he can only ride one at a time and, in his 70s, he is not able to ride as frequently as before. Joel expressed a desire to avoid accidents, stating, "I don’t want to die like a bug on a windshield."
Approximately 70 motorcycles from his collection are scheduled to be sold at the Gooding Christie’s Rétromobile New York auction at the Javits Center on November 20 and 21. Joel expressed affection for a wide variety of motorcycle makes, including Japanese, Italian, English, American, and Asian models, highlighting a Moto Guzzi California Vintage 1100 as his "crown jewel."
He also shared that he will miss the anonymity and freedom of riding motorcycles, where a helmet and goggles allow him to be "just another schmuck on a motorcycle."
