Billy Joel Announces He Can No Longer Drive or Perform Due to Health Diagnosis

Billy Joel, the iconic musician, has announced that he is unable to drive or perform due to a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder. The 77-year-old revealed the news in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, detailing how the condition has affected his daily life and career.

"I'm not allowed to drive," Joel stated, explaining that the NPH diagnosis makes driving "a little bit iffy." He added that he must undergo a series of tests to determine if he can resume performing.

Due to these health concerns, Joel is auctioning off more than 70 motorcycles from his collection. "I don't want to die like a bug on a windshield," he explained. "So I thought I’d put a lot of them on auction." Joel, who was a rider rather than a collector, stated it was time to let them go. He mentioned that the concerts' loud volume and the stress of performing could be akin to concussions, prompting his doctors to advise against performing for now.

Joel first announced his NPH diagnosis in May 2025, which led him to cancel remaining tour dates. The condition is characterized by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, which can disrupt cognitive functions, affecting balance and memory, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Last month, Joel disclosed that he underwent brain surgery to insert a shunt, which he said has improved his balance, memory, and overall ability to function. He is continuing with physical therapy and following his doctors' advice, assuring fans, "I'm not going anywhere. I'm here. I'm still here."
