Billy Gardell Attributes Life-Saving Impact to Bariatric Surgery

Billy Gardell, known for his role in the sitcom "Mike & Molly," has shared that his bariatric surgery in 2021 "probably saved my life." The 57-year-old actor revealed on the "Breaking Bread" podcast that the procedure was a turning point in managing significant health issues.

Gardell detailed that he had developed type 2 diabetes, along with cholesterol and heart-related problems. He recalled his doctor's warning that "after 50 the warranties start running out." He had previously been able to carry his weight due to a solid build from playing sports in his youth, but eventually, he could no longer outrun the health consequences.

When his knee injury prevented him from exercising, Gardell decided a more drastic approach was necessary. Following the surgery, he is no longer on medication and his diabetes has resolved. He noted that while he must be selective about his food intake due to his reduced stomach capacity, the mental challenge of overcoming past eating habits persists.

Beyond the health benefits, Gardell highlighted that his weight loss has enabled him to enjoy simple activities he previously couldn't, such as hiking with his wife. He described these regained freedoms as deeply meaningful.

Gardell cited his family, including his wife Patty Knight and their son William, as his primary motivation for seeking better health. He expressed a desire to be an active participant in his own life rather than merely surviving.

Gardell has a history of significant weight fluctuations, previously weighing up to 379 pounds. He has maintained his weight loss, fluctuating between 210 and 215 pounds, through diet and exercise, as reported in December 2025. He starred in "Mike & Molly" for six seasons from 2010 to 2016 alongside Melissa McCarthy.
