Actor Billy Crystal has shared a vivid account of evacuating his Pacific Palisades home as wildfires engulfed the Los Angeles area in January 2025, ultimately losing the property he and his wife Janice had owned for nearly five decades.

Crystal, 78, recounted the terrifying experience in a recent interview, detailing how the couple was awakened by low-flying helicopters and the escalating sounds of sirens and fire trucks. "Then it became really real, and you think: 'It went from 20 acres to 200 acres in 15 minutes. Let's get out of here.' Then the alert went off," he told People magazine.

The couple grabbed photo albums and essential clothing, intending to return within a day. However, as they monitored their home's security footage from their daughter's residence, all they could see were flying embers. "And your life there, for 46 years, the stores, where you eat, pick up your prescriptions, it's disappearing," Crystal recalled, realizing the extent of the danger to their neighborhood.

Upon returning to the site after the fires subsided, Crystal described the scene as resembling "an episode of The Walking Dead." He observed "skeletons of trees and chimneys" and debris scattered throughout the streets, with no one around.

Crystal and his wife purchased the home in 1979 for $435,000. The property, which was estimated to be worth $9 million, was where they raised their two daughters. He is preparing to open his new one-man show, titled "860" after the address of his lost home on Chautauqua Blvd., on Broadway on October 21.

Among the few items salvaged from the wreckage was a garden rock inscribed with the word "Laughter." Crystal noted its significance, recalling how he helped his mother cope with grief after his father's death by making her laugh. "That word made my life possible. So the fact that was the first thing [we found], we'll be okay," he said.

Crystal and his wife stated at the time, "Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing." They expressed sympathy for neighbors and friends who also suffered losses and expressed confidence that their "resilient" community would rebuild.

Crystal was among several celebrities whose homes were affected by the Palisades Fire. The incident prompted widespread destruction, displacing thousands and leading to significant property loss throughout the Los Angeles area. The Crystals had served as honorary mayors of Pacific Palisades from 2018 to 2021.
