Billy Corgan Calls Age Gap With Wife Chloe Mendel an 'Advantage'
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman explained his perspective on relationships and generational differences.
Billy Corgan, 59, believes the 26-year age difference between himself and his wife, Chloe Mendel, has been a significant "advantage" to their relationship. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman shared his views in a recent interview, suggesting that he finds it difficult to connect with women from his own generation due to their perceived experiences.
"I think a lot of women born in the ‘90s [like Mendel], given the societal changes, [saw the] proper rise of feminism as a way to balance properly a lot of things," Corgan stated on The New York Times’ “Popcast.” He elaborated that many women from his generation, having navigated societal shifts and potential past traumas without adequate support, often carry "broken" parts.
Corgan, who is 59, met Mendel, 34, in 2012. He recounted encountering "a lot of broken women along the way" before his relationship with Mendel began. "When I met my wife and having that gap, she just wasn’t affected by those same politics," he said. "She just had a different version."
He further explained that Mendel possessed a different sense of self-confidence because she "hadn’t been wounded" by similar life experiences. "I had the advantage of somebody who was really open to love and the possibility, and for whatever reason, [she] just decided not to judge me for who I was, particularly, in that moment," he added.
The couple, who were introduced by a mutual friend when Mendel was 19 and Corgan was 44, became engaged in 2022 and married the following September. They share three children: Augustus Juppiter, 10; Philomena Clementine, 8; and Juno Delphine, 1.
Their relationship and wedding were featured in the 2024 reality show "Billy Corgan’s Adventures in Carnyland." Corgan stated that the show provided an authentic look at their dynamic, emphasizing their partnership. "People have often speculated — particularly given our age difference — what that dynamic is like, and I think the show really shows that we’re partners in life," he told ScreenRant in 2024. "We really are a 50/50 endeavor here."
Corgan also praised Mendel as an "amazing mother," as well as a talented designer and businesswoman.
