The Buffalo Bills are set to play the Canadian national anthem, "O Canada," before their Sept. 17 home opener against the Detroit Lions. This tradition, observed by Buffalo sports teams including the NHL's Sabres and minor league baseball's Bisons, continues as the Bills inaugurate their new $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium. The Barenaked Ladies are scheduled to perform "O Canada," while Auliʻi Cravalho, known for her role in Disney's "Moana," will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner."
The new stadium has been the subject of significant fan criticism following its unveiling. Attendees at a recent training camp practice reported poor sightlines and obstructions, such as stair railings and video boards, that blocked views of the field, particularly in the end zones. Fans expressed frustration on social media, with some stating their new season tickets, which involved substantial Personal Seat License (PSL) fees and renewal costs, offered obstructed views despite assurances from the organization.
One season ticket holder, Melissa Wroblewski, stated she was assured her seats would have no obstructions, only to find railings blocking her view. Another fan, Kevin Kruger, who has held season tickets since 2019, described the prohibitive cost of renewing his previous seats, with initial costs reaching $15,000 for two seats including PSL fees and season ticket prices.
In response to these complaints, the Bills organization stated they would "refine any details" in the weeks leading up to the home opener. The team also announced plans to replace the stadium's grass playing surface before their first three home games, citing a commitment to providing the best possible conditions for the players. The decision to re-sod the field was made to ensure optimal playability during the early stretch of consecutive home games.
