Bills' Pre-Game Anthem Choice Sparks Fan Outrage

NFL fans expressed anger and confusion on social media after the Buffalo Bills played the Canadian national anthem prior to their Thursday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions at the newly opened Highmark Stadium. The performance of 'O Canada' by the Barenaked Ladies preceded a rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' by Auli'i Cravalho.

The Bills, who have a significant fanbase in southern Ontario and Toronto, located a short drive from Buffalo, made the gesture to their Canadian supporters. However, the decision to play the Canadian anthem at an American sporting event was met with widespread disapproval from viewers outside the immediate region.

Many fans took to social media to voice their displeasure. "We doing the Canadian National Anthem for TNF?" questioned former NFL player Taylor Lewan. Other comments included "The Canadian national?? In an NFL football game in America?? We’re compromised," and labeling the act as "embarrassing." Some criticized the choice as a sign of weakness or disrespect to the United States, with one user stating, "Get woke, go broke."

Beyond the choice of anthem, the performance itself also drew criticism. "They butchered the anthem, wow," read one online comment, while another stated, "I don’t even care they did the Canadian National Anthem at the game… but that was a really bad rendition, right? I’m not imagining things… that was awful."

The Buffalo Bills have a history of acknowledging their Canadian fanbase. The team previously held annual Canadian fan appreciation games and played a series of regular-season games in Toronto from 2008 to 2013. Both the Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, owned by Terry Pegula, rely on Canadian attendance. Canadians have historically constituted a notable portion of the Bills' season-ticket holders, and the Sabres arena frequently sees attendance from Canadian hockey fans, particularly when rivals like the Toronto Maple Leafs or Montreal Canadiens visit.

Despite these historical ties and the team's efforts to cater to Canadian fans, the decision to feature the Canadian anthem at the home opener of a new stadium generated significant backlash, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding national symbols in professional sports.
