Dr. Herbert Wertheim, an 87-year-old optometrist, philanthropist, and frequent visitor to Mar-a-Lago, has purchased Ferrari's inaugural electric vehicle, the Luce, for over $40 million at an auction during Monterey Car Week in California. The acquisition marks the most expensive new car ever sold at a Sotheby's auction, with proceeds benefiting the Ferrari Foundation, which supports individuals with paralysis.
Despite the car's significant price tag and the considerable attention it has garnered, Wertheim stated he has no intention of driving the Ferrari Luce for personal use. "It will not be my personal car to go to Publix. This is happiness. I’m going to give it all away," Wertheim told The Wall Street Journal. His plan is to loan the vehicle to charitable organizations to aid them in their fundraising efforts.
Wertheim, who made his estimated $7 billion fortune by founding Brain Power, a company specializing in optical tints, is known for his philanthropy and distinctive personal style, often seen wearing his signature red fedora. He has previously supported various causes, including a $2 million bid for a private lunch with Donald Trump in the Oval Office in February, which helped raise $7.5 million for local children, police, and firefighters.
The Ferrari Luce has faced a mixed reception since its design was unveiled, with some critics questioning its departure from classic Ferrari aesthetics, while others have praised its performance. The car features Ferrari's first five-seat model and a unique color-shifting semi-gloss finish. It has been shipped to Italy for modifications and is expected to be delivered to Wertheim next year.
This purchase follows Wertheim's history of acquiring notable vehicles at auction, including a Ferrari Daytona SP3. His philanthropic endeavors also include a $65 million donation to Florida State University last year, which led to the naming of the school's business building after him. Through the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation, established with his ex-wife, he has contributed significantly to various institutions, aiming to empower students and create lasting opportunities.
