Dr. Herbert Wertheim, an 87-year-old optometrist, philanthropist, and Mar-a-Lago resident, has purchased Ferrari's first-ever electric car, the Ferrari Luce, for over $40 million at a Sotheby's auction. Wertheim, who made his fortune founding the optical technology company Brain Power, stated that he does not plan to drive the vehicle personally.
Instead, Wertheim intends to loan the car to charitable organizations to aid their fundraising efforts. "It will not be my personal car to go to Publix," he told the Wall Street Journal. "This is happiness. I’m going to give it all away."
The auction took place during Monterey Car Week in California, with proceeds from the sale going to the Ferrari Foundation, which supports non-profit organizations and individuals living with paralysis. Wertheim's winning bid exceeded the estimated sale price by millions, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at a Sotheby's auction.
The Ferrari Luce has been a subject of divisive reactions since its design was unveiled, with some critics noting a departure from the automaker's classic aesthetic. However, early reviews have reportedly praised its performance. The car features a five-seat model, a unique semi-gloss finish that shifts color with light, and is expected to be delivered after modifications in Italy next year.
Wertheim is a prominent philanthropist known for his significant donations. In the past year, he gifted $65 million to Florida State University, resulting in the school's business building being named after him. He and his ex-wife, Nicole, also founded the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation, which supports universities and other causes.
This is not Wertheim's first high-value automotive purchase at auction. He has previously bought cars such as a Ferrari Daytona SP3. Beyond his car collection, Wertheim also owns a mansion in Manalapan, Florida, valued at over $60 million. He is also known for his distinctive personal style, often wearing a red fedora, for which he obtained special permission to wear indoors at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
