Bill Maher Predicts Republican Midterm Defeat, Warns of Democratic Socialist Influence

HBO host Bill Maher predicted on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS" that Republicans would suffer a substantial defeat in the November midterm elections, labeling it a "classic historical a-- whooping." However, he also cautioned that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) could present a challenge for Democrats heading into the 2028 presidential election.

Maher suggested that voters would use the midterms to express dissatisfaction with former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, before focusing on internal Democratic Party divisions.

"It’s going to be a classic historical a-- whooping," Maher stated. "Now, 2028 is a different story. The Democrats have a crazy animal living in their house called the DSA, and they believe truly insane things."

The White House, in a statement to Fox News Digital, rejected Maher's midterm predictions. A spokesperson argued that Trump remains the Republican Party's strongest asset, citing his "robust coalition" with the MAGA movement and his ability to connect with voters.

"President Trump is the unequivocal leader, best messenger, and unmatched motivator for the Republican Party, and he is committed to maintaining Republican majorities in Congress," the spokesperson said.

Maher attributed the potential Republican losses to Trump's actions while in office, suggesting he had become "drunk with power." He drew a parallel to President Joe Biden's handling of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

"Trump screwed the pooch. That’s what happened. He got drunk with power," Maher said. "This is the pattern in this country. Somebody gets elected. They go way too far with their side of things. Biden did it to a degree with wokeness, and he was too feeble to fight the far left."

Maher specifically warned about the DSA's influence on the Democratic Party's future. He described the group as a "crazy animal" within the party that espouses "truly insane things," citing potential issues like making the conflict in Gaza a "litmus test."

Recent polling has indicated headwinds for Republicans. A Fox News poll projected Democrats with a path to a House majority, needing three of 19 toss-up races to secure control. Republicans would require at least 17.

Comedian and television host Bill Maher arrived for the 27th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor gala at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on June 28, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

During a rally in Ohio, Trump dismissed these polls, asserting that they did not account for his ability to mobilize voters. He urged supporters to treat the midterms as if he were personally on the ballot.

"Just pretend that I’m running," Trump said. "When I run, we win."

The Democratic Party's socialist wing has seen primary successes, increasing attention on the DSA's role. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., rejoined the DSA in August after a seven-year absence, fueling speculation about potential future candidacies.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle also highlighted the Trump administration's record on issues such as taxes, border security, energy, employment, and prescription drug costs as a contrast to Democratic policies.

"The choice has never been more clear: doubling down on President Trump’s winning, commonsense agenda or the Democrats’ extreme liberal policies and obstruction," Ingle stated.

The DSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
