Comedian Bill Maher predicted on Sunday that the Republican Party will face a substantial defeat in the upcoming midterm elections, attributing the potential loss to the influence of former President Donald Trump. "It’s going to be a classic historical ass whooping," Maher stated during an appearance on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS."
Maher suggested that Trump, by becoming "drunk with power" in his second term, has "screwed the pooch." He drew parallels to past presidents who overstepped their mandates, and criticized President Joe Biden for being "too feeble to fight the far left" and for his administration's approach to "wokeness."
The comedian, who recently received the Mark Twain Prize, pointed to Trump's immigration policies and alleged actions by federal agents as reasons for alienating voters, including some within the Republican base. "He's lost even his own people," Maher commented, adding that politicians often fail to undo the negative aspects of their predecessors' policies.
While acknowledging that analyses and polling currently indicate a potential "blue wave" for Democrats, Maher believes the immediate electoral message from voters will be directed at Trump. He articulated this message as, "Donald Trump went too far, and his party will pay."
Maher suggested that the 2028 election might present a different landscape, with the Democratic Party potentially facing challenges from its more progressive wing. He described groups like the Democratic Socialists of America as a "crazy animal living in their house" that could influence future elections with specific issue litmus tests.
However, for the upcoming midterms, Maher emphasized that voters have "one piece of business": to hold Trump accountable for actions he believes went too far, citing issues such as "inflation, gas prices" and unfulfilled promises. He concluded that Trump and his party are likely to bear the consequences at the ballot box.
