Bill Maher criticizes Macklemore, revives 2014 costume controversy

Comedian Bill Maher continued his criticism of rapper Macklemore on his HBO show "Real Time," reviving a 2014 controversy where Macklemore wore a prosthetic nose as part of a costume. Maher's remarks came after Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's "Mathematics Tour" following anti-Israel statements made at a concert.

During the show, Maher referred to the 2014 incident, stating, "Everyone is paying more. Macklemore had to pay an arm and a leg for a giant fake prosthetic ‘Jew’ nose." Macklemore had previously issued an apology for the costume, which he said caused hurt and offense.

Maher also addressed Macklemore's recent comments about the Israel-Hamas war, which he characterized as "lies about how Gaza is a genocide." He questioned why such political statements are being made at concerts, suggesting that audiences are not seeking political commentary during musical performances.

"Is anyone looking for any of this at a concert? I mean, do I really need a lecture on politics of any stripe right when the molly is kicking in? It's so arrogant on both their sides," Maher said.

The controversy surrounding Macklemore began when he told concertgoers in New Jersey that he wanted to use the tour to advocate for Palestine. Following these remarks, he was reportedly dropped from Sheeran's tour. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette Stadium where a concert was scheduled, was reportedly offended by Macklemore's comments and did not permit him to perform.

Macklemore subsequently announced a $1 million donation to Palestinian aid organizations, and called on Kraft to match the donation. Kraft then pledged $2 million for humanitarian aid.

Maher's commentary also touched upon a response from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who stated she would change the radio station if Ed Sheeran came on due to his association with Macklemore. Maher quipped that he also changes the station when Sheeran plays.

Political commentator Kaivan Shroff criticized Maher's stance, arguing that Maher himself, as a celebrity with a long-running show featuring opinions on various topics, cannot credibly object to entertainers expressing political views. Shroff suggested that Maher's approach, while potentially humorous, distracts from the substance of Macklemore's message and the broader political discourse.
