Talk show host Bill Maher has asserted that liberals are overly preoccupied with former President Donald Trump's personality and public behavior, suggesting this prolonged focus is counterproductive and overlooks actual policy. Maher made these remarks on his "Club Random" podcast, stating that if individuals are still fixated on Trump's character after ten years, the issue lies with their own priorities.

"If, at this point, ten years into the Trump situation, you are still obsessing about his personality, my view is that’s on you," Maher said. He emphasized that while criticism of Trump's actions in office is warranted, dwelling on his unchanging personality traits has become a distraction. "To keep just focusing on these personality things that we’ve talked about for ten years — they’re not going to change. That’s who he is," he added.

Maher recounted an anecdote about a dinner with Trump in March 2025, where he presented a framed list of nearly 60 insults Trump had directed at him over the years, which Trump then signed. Maher also referenced Trump's alleged attempts to prevent him from receiving the Mark Twain Prize, suggesting it was a sign of Trump taking him seriously. He described Trump's reaction to the Kennedy Center's decision to remove his name from a building, which Maher said was covered in drapery.

"I don’t care when he calls me names now," Maher stated. "It’s the way he does it. It’s the way he talks. It’s who he is." He suggested that as long as Trump's actions do not have a tangible negative impact on people's lives, their intense reaction is unwarranted. Maher listed various Trump-related controversies, such as debates over the White House reflecting pool, ballrooms, or lawn activities, which he deemed trivial and not reflective of genuine concerns.

"I don’t care about your reflecting pool. I don’t care about your ballroom. I don’t care what you do on the lawn," Maher said. He believes that those who remain intensely focused on Trump's personal conduct are allowing him to dictate their thought processes and emotional responses. "If you’re a person who does, you’re just way too into Donald Trump as the person who controls how you think in life," he explained. Maher concluded by asserting his own detachment from such anxieties, stating, "I’m winning... Your life is all about Donald Trump. Mine isn’t."
