Bill Maher Criticizes 'Intolerant Left' Over Backlash to Lesbian Bar's Mask Policy

Comedian Bill Maher recently criticized what he described as the "intolerant left" for their strong reaction to a Massachusetts lesbian bar's decision to adjust its COVID-era mask policy. During an episode of HBO's "Real Time," Maher discussed the controversy surrounding the Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield, Massachusetts.

The bar, which has a mission statement that includes "dykes, transsexuals, gender freaks, workers and friends," had been struggling financially. According to a report by The Boston Globe, the bar initially allowed patrons who could not afford the cover charge to enter without payment, including those who were homeless, but maintained a strict mask mandate.

In an effort to improve its economic situation, the bar decided to make Saturday nights "mask optional," allowing patrons to enter without face coverings on those evenings. This decision led to significant backlash from some community members, as reported by the Boston Globe. A community meeting on September 11 saw virtual attendees express grievances, with some objecting to the race of a mediator.

Maher pointed out the apparent contradiction in the criticism, stating, "And of course, the tolerant left did what they always do — became very intolerant and left." He highlighted some of the harsh criticisms directed at the bar, including statements such as, "People like you kill disabled people in the name of your own leisure and convenience," and even threats like, "I hope your venue gets firebombed."
