Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher has sharply criticized Democratic congressional candidate Melissa Chaudhry for what he described as her abandonment of liberal values, specifically LGBTQ+ rights, to appeal to Muslim voters. Chaudhry is challenging incumbent Rep. Adam Smith in Washington's 9th Congressional District.

Maher highlighted comments made by Chaudhry, a self-described "White American convert to Islam," when asked why LGBTQ+ rights were absent from her campaign website. According to reports, she stated, "A lot of Muslims do not feel that way, unfortunately." Maher questioned this stance, asking, "Is this the progressive policy now? Is Ms. Chaudhry right? We throw gay people under the bus anytime it clashes with what makes Muslims uncomfortable?"

Maher framed Chaudhry's comments within a broader discussion about upholding Western civilization, asserting that while immigrants don't need to "love everything about America," they must affirm their support for Western values. He suggested that liberals often misinterpret critiques of this nature as Islamophobia, when in reality, they are "just facts and a little honesty."

Reports indicate that Chaudhry acknowledged being "careful about her Muslim constituents." Following the backlash, Chaudhry addressed the remarks in a Facebook post, calling the interview "one of the least-proud moments of my life." She assured LGBTQ+ individuals that their rights are safe with her, stating, "you are, you have always been, and you always will be."

Chaudhry also released a video, "LGBTQ+ Folks, and the Media’s Attacks On Me," where she claimed that media attention focused on her perceived stance on LGBTQ+ rights ignored the threats she has faced. She reiterated her commitment to "dignity, safety and opportunity for all" and asserted that she has supported full equality for LGBTQ+ people her entire life, describing the issue as "the fabric of my life."
