Bill Maher Compares Dining With Trump to Dating Taylor Swift

Talk show host Bill Maher responded to President Donald Trump's extensive Truth Social post criticizing him by comparing the experience of dining with the former president to dating pop star Taylor Swift.

"I mean, eating with Trump is like dating Taylor Swift. It’s a lot of laughs at the time, but later on, they’re tearing you a new a–hole," Maher said on his HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday night. He also referenced Swift's reputation for writing songs about ex-boyfriends, implying Trump's criticism was akin to such a public airing of grievances.

Maher further likened Trump's reaction to "Kelly Clarkson in a toy store," referring to a widely reported incident involving the singer. The host received a printed copy of Trump's Truth Social post, which ran over 1,300 words, and addressed some of its points.

Maher acknowledged Trump's insult, "Let’s talk about the complete and total loser Bill Maher," deadpanning, "I’ll own that." However, he expressed frustration that Trump "doesn’t even notice what I say," pointing to an instance where the former president criticized Maher's stance on Iran, despite Maher having previously agreed with Trump on the issue. Maher also disputed Trump's claim that Maher called him incessantly, stating that he would be afraid to call the president.

During the segment, Maher played clips of himself agreeing with Trump on the Iran nuclear deal and highlighted that he had never called the president, countering Trump's assertion. Maher suggested that dining at the White House was unusual because "After you leave, they review you," a remark that seemed to reference the intense public scrutiny following the dinner.

The Oct. 15 White House dinner attended by Maher also included singer Kid Rock and ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith. Trump's lengthy critique appeared to be a response to Maher's earlier monologue on his Oct. 23 show, where Maher commented on Trump's public praise of men's physiques. Maher playfully expressed mock disappointment that Trump had not commented on his appearance during their four-hour dinner.
