Comedian Bill Maher asserted on his show "Real Time" that the Democratic Party is comfortable with public displays of faith, provided that faith is not Jewish. Maher's comments came after CNN anchor Dana Bash discussed Texas Democrat James Talarico's open Christianity. "Well, in the Democratic Party, as long as that faith isn’t Jewish, you’re good," Maher stated, to which Bash responded, "Well, you said it." Maher then affirmed, "Yeah, I said it because it’s true!" Mahers' remarks coincide with shifting public opinion regarding Israel. Pew Research Center data indicates that 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents hold an unfavorable view of Israel, a significant increase from 53% in 2022. In contrast, 41% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents surveyed hold a negative view of Israel, while 58% of this group have a positive view. The Democratic Party has featured several candidates and public figures who have expressed anti-Israel sentiments, including Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has also been vocal in his criticism of Israel. Sam Markstein, national political director and spokesman for the Republican Jewish Coalition, echoed Maher's sentiment, stating that the Republican Party is the only one that accommodates Jewish individuals who are proud of their identity and support Israel. "It’s a rare occasion when we agree with Bill Maher, but he’s right: there is only one party where American Jews can be proudly Jewish and loudly pro-Israel, and it’s the Republican Party," Markstein told Fox News Digital. He further criticized the Democratic Party, citing instances such as Vice President Kamala Harris passing over Josh Shapiro for a 2024 ticket and the rise of elected officials he characterized as espousing antisemitism. "The Democratic Party is being remade by its radicalized base, and party leadership continues to fecklessly whistle past the political graveyard as American Jews flee," Markstein added. The Democratic National Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
