The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $540.2 million grant to the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle. The 10-year grant, announced Tuesday, aims to bolster the independent research organization's ability to provide scientifically rigorous health evidence for global leaders and policymakers.
According to IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray, the funding will significantly expand the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, increasing its data collection from approximately 952 locations to nearly 5,000. This expansion is intended to provide more comprehensive health data for thousands of new areas worldwide.
While Bill Gates stepped down as CEO of the foundation he co-founded with his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, he remains the sole chair. This significant donation comes at a time when Gates has been under intensified scrutiny due to his past relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The depth of their association became more public following the release of Department of Justice documents in late January, which contained emails from Epstein alleging inappropriate conduct by Gates.
These revelations have reportedly impacted Gates' personal and professional life. Following the public disclosure of the Epstein correspondence, Gates reportedly held an internal town hall meeting with foundation employees, where he acknowledged having affairs with two Russian women mentioned in the emails. He described his relationship with Epstein as a mistake and stated it was contrary to the foundation's values. The release of Epstein's emails reportedly caused significant distress among foundation staff.
The Gates Foundation's CEO, Mark Suzman, also addressed the concerns in a separate meeting in February, which Gates did not attend. Employees reportedly questioned Gates' ties to Epstein and sought guidance on how to address the allegations with foundation partners. The controversy has led to some organizations and individuals withdrawing from events involving Gates.
In recent months, Gates has also faced questions about his personal life in public forums, including testimony before Congress. He has previously apologized for his friendship with Epstein, stating that he wished they had never met. Gates has also acknowledged a relationship with a medical entrepreneur, admitting to past affairs to his former wife, Melinda. The IHME is an independent global health research center housed at the University of Washington. Its work focuses on measuring and analyzing health trends to inform public health strategies and investments worldwide.
