Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was photographed arriving at the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference in Idaho, an event often described as a "summer camp for billionaires." Gates, 70, was seen with his girlfriend, Paula Hurd, a few weeks after testifying before the House Oversight Committee regarding his past association with Jeffrey Epstein.
During his testimony, Gates addressed his relationship with Epstein, stating that Epstein had become aware of sensitive personal information, including his marital infidelity, and that Epstein had attempted to use this information to pressure him. Gates told the committee that he had affairs with two Russian women and a younger medical entrepreneur around 2010, a fact he believed Epstein sought to exploit. Emails released earlier this year appeared to suggest Gates was having an extramarital affair with his then-wife, Melinda French Gates.
French Gates has previously stated that her ex-husband's association with Epstein was a significant factor in their 2021 divorce. Gates has repeatedly expressed regret for his ties to Epstein but has denied any wrongdoing and has never been charged with a crime.
Epstein's emails suggested he was assisting Gates with drugs and facilitating illicit meetings with married women. Gates identified the three women involved as bridge player Mila Antonova, physicist Karima Nigmatulina, and Dr. Alice Jacobs Nesselrodt. While Gates stated Epstein never blackmailed him, he acknowledged that the emails suggested Epstein may have contemplated such actions.
Gates first met Epstein in 2011 through an advisor, by which time Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution in Florida. Gates claimed he initially believed Epstein could help connect him with wealthy individuals for philanthropic efforts and stated he cut ties in 2014. He also affirmed that he never visited Epstein's Little Saint James Island.
The Sun Valley Conference, hosted annually by Allen & Co., is known for its secrecy and attracts prominent figures in business and technology. Other attendees this year included OpenAI founder Sam Altman, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, and Palantir's Alex Karp. Gates has been a regular attendee, often accompanied by Hurd since their relationship was confirmed in February 2023.
