Bill Bradley and Earl Monroe Reunite at Bronx School Dedication
Knicks legends celebrate the opening of the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School, a specialized charter school focused on basketball and career development.
Former New York Knicks teammates and champions Bill Bradley and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe recently reunited in the South Bronx to celebrate the opening of the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School. The specialized charter school, which opened in 2021, serves 440 students in grades 9-12 and integrates basketball with career education in fields such as media, law, and marketing.
Bradley, a two-time NBA champion and former U.S. Senator, expressed his deep connection to Monroe, stating, “When you are a teammate and you go to the top, it’s a forever bond, and we did that twice.” He emphasized that his friendship with Monroe, whom he met decades ago, is the primary reason for his presence. Monroe, a Hall of Famer, echoed the sentiment of their enduring bond.
The ceremony highlighted the school's mission to provide students with diverse career opportunities within the sports industry and beyond. Monroe noted that not everyone can be a professional athlete, but many can find fulfilling careers in other aspects of sports. He believes the school offers an excellent way for young people to engage with the sport while gaining valuable skills and satisfaction.
The event drew a notable crowd of guests, including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, former Knicks players John Starks and Stephon Marbury, and celebrity fan Tracy Morgan. ESPN personality Mike Greenberg served as the host.
Commissioner Silver remarked on the timeliness of the event, coinciding with the Knicks' recent championship win, the first since Monroe's 1973 squad. Monroe expressed his happiness for the city and the team, stating, “We’re a city of champs, so we deserve it.”
Reflecting on the past, Monroe recalled being part of the Baltimore Bullets team that defeated the Knicks in the 1971 Eastern Conference Finals, preventing them from repeating as champions. Despite this history, Monroe expressed confidence in the current Knicks' mindset as defending champions, believing their past victory will fuel their determination to win again.
Bradley also shared his perspective on Monroe, noting that his interest in the community has always been evident. He recalled their early interactions, saying, “From the first day I met him… Earl Monroe was interested in the community, and this is the epitome of being interested in the community.” The new building at the school is set to be named after Dan and Abbe Klores.
