The University of North Carolina (UNC) football program finds itself in a state of significant turmoil as the 2026 season approaches, with head coach Bill Belichick at the center of a widening circle of controversy.
Recent weeks have seen a series of events that have cast a shadow over Belichick's tenure, including the indefinite medical leave of his son and defensive coordinator, Steve Belichick, the paid administrative leave of General Manager Mike Lombardi, and legal troubles involving Belichick himself and his daughter-in-law, Jen Belichick.
Steve Belichick's absence leaves the Tar Heels without a defensive coordinator. "It's a medical situation so I really can't make any further comment on that," Bill Belichick stated regarding his son's condition, expressing hope for his swift return.
Adding to the disruption, General Manager Mike Lombardi, the highest-paid GM in college football, was placed on paid administrative leave in late July amid an ongoing university investigation. The university has declined to comment on the specifics, citing confidential personnel matters, while Lombardi's attorney has stated his client is cooperating and expects a thorough investigation.
Further complicating the situation, an arrest order was issued for Jen Belichick, Steve's wife, after she reportedly missed a court appearance related to a traffic violation. Her lawyer has since stated there was no arrest order and the ticket would be resolved. Earlier in the offseason, Jen Belichick was reportedly involved in a heated confrontation with Bill Belichick's girlfriend, 25-year-old Jordon Hudson, in November.
Bill Belichick, who joined UNC in December 2024 after a storied NFL career, is also facing a $300,000 legal dispute. A painter is suing Belichick, alleging injury from unsafe conditions on his Nantucket property in June 2024. Reports indicate Belichick intends to pursue a jury trial and has filed a complaint against the construction company involved.
The program has also seen the hiring of Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator. Petrino, previously a head coach at Arkansas, Louisville, and the Atlanta Falcons, joined UNC in January. His departure from Arkansas in 2012 followed the revelation of an affair with a former volleyball player whom he had hired and given a gift.
Belichick's first season at UNC concluded with a disappointing 4-8 record, missing a bowl game for the first time since 2018. The team is set to open the 2026 season against TCU in Dublin.
Amidst these off-field developments, the team has reportedly added approximately 60 new players and expects a stronger performance in the upcoming season, according to Belichick.
