Bill Belichick's UNC Falls Just Short Against Top-Ranked Miami
The Tar Heels, coached by Bill Belichick, led for much of the game but a late strip-sack and subsequent penalties proved too much to overcome against the undefeated Hurricanes.
The North Carolina Tar Heels, coached by Bill Belichick, mounted a strong challenge against the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, ultimately falling 38-35 in a game that saw significant momentum shifts. The loss drops UNC to 4-4 on the season, while Miami remains undefeated at 8-0.
Despite off-field reports regarding Belichick's personal life, his team played with notable intensity. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. delivered a standout performance, throwing for 341 yards and four touchdowns on 28-of-34 passing. His touchdown pass to Jordan Shipp in the third quarter gave UNC its first lead of the game.
The teams exchanged blows throughout the second half, with UNC managing to take a 21-17 lead. Miami responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead, but UNC matched them with a 16-play, 75-yard drive capped by Demon June's one-yard touchdown run. This put UNC ahead 35-31 with considerable time remaining.
However, the momentum swung decisively when Miami's Marquise Lightfoot sacked Edwards, forcing a fumble that the Hurricanes recovered. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah capitalized on the turnover, leading a drive that resulted in a nine-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Toney, pushing Miami ahead 38-35 with 2:33 left.
UNC mounted a final push, scoring on a touchdown pass with 1:38 remaining. Needing to recover an onside kick, the Tar Heels successfully executed the play twice, but penalties on both occasions nullified the recoveries. The first was called for offsides, and the second for illegal contact on the receiving team before the ball traveled 10 yards. Miami then recovered the ball on the third attempt and ran out the clock.
Mensah completed 274 yards and three touchdowns through the air, adding 36 rushing yards. Toney was a key target with seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Mark Fletcher Jr. contributed three total touchdowns for Miami.
