Big Brother UK Faces Over 1,600 Ofcom Complaints Amidst Show Drama

The reality television program Big Brother has received 1,654 complaints to Ofcom within a single week, according to reports. The surge in complaints stems from a series of contentious incidents and explosive arguments that have occurred in the ITV house since the show's return to screens three weeks ago.

Ofcom confirmed that the majority of the complaints, totaling 1,191, were lodged on September 30. This episode featured a heated exchange during a nominations task between housemates Johanne and Rochelle, which resulted in Johanne receiving a formal warning from Big Brother. Producers cited Johanne's "tone and body language as unacceptable." Viewers expressed dissatisfaction when Rochelle did not receive a similar warning for her conduct during the confrontation.

Another episode, aired on October 4, which involved a "House of Revelations" segment, garnered 191 complaints related to alleged bullying behavior directed at a housemate identified as Twinks. Prior to these, on September 27, 634 complaints were made, with a significant portion concerning alleged racism and bullying claims leveled against Rochelle by other housemates, including remarks made by Johanne.

Following Johanne's eviction on Friday, an additional 97 complaints were filed. These complaints addressed the treatment of both Johanne and Rochelle around the time of the eviction, specifically citing "alleged racism and bullying behavior." On October 5, the broadcasting regulator received 53 more complaints, many of which criticized the way newcomer Twinks was treated by other housemates.

Earlier in the week, a significant argument erupted involving housemate Pauline, leading to her being temporarily removed from the bedroom. The dispute began after Pauline made comments about facing eviction, which visibly upset newcomer Catrin. Rochelle then confronted Pauline about her remarks, escalating into a heated exchange where Pauline was restrained by another housemate, Harry. Pauline was subsequently called to the Diary Room and advised by Big Brother that it would be "appropriate" for her to spend the night in an alternative room.

These incidents have sparked varied reactions among viewers, with discussions on social media platforms debating the actions of housemates and the show's production. The face-to-face nominations episode that preceded these events reportedly achieved the highest overnight viewership for the series since its 2024 launch.

Excluding streaming figures from ITVX, the show recorded a peak viewership of 840,000 on ITV2, with an average of 787,000. This represents a 77% increase compared to the same episode in 2025. Year-on-year, the series has seen a 17% rise in viewership, with the 16-34 age demographic increasing by 45%. To date, the series has accumulated 22 million streams, and further drama is anticipated as the season progresses. Big Brother continues to air on ITV2 and ITVX.
