Big Brother Housemate Omar Faces Scrutiny Over 'Controlling' Behavior
Omar receives warnings from loved ones and sparks over 7,000 Ofcom complaints for his treatment of Rhianna.
Big Brother contestant Omar has been subjected to stark warnings from his loved ones regarding his "coercive and controlling" behavior towards fellow housemate Rhianna. The situation has escalated, leading to over 7,000 complaints filed with Ofcom, making it one of the most complained-about moments in Big Brother history.
During a segment where housemates met with their friends and family, Omar was confronted by a friend named Sebastian. Sebastian advised Omar to remember his purpose in the house, stating, "Just remember you're not here for love. Just remember you're being perceived, s**t might be cut up... Remember to have fun, the first two weeks you were laughing, enjoying yourself, just get back to that."
Following this conversation, Omar admitted it was "difficult" and suggested to Rhianna that they "tone things down" between them. Later, Rhianna's sister, Mariana, visited her and expressed deep concern. Mariana told Rhianna, "I really want you to know, the past two weeks, he's been emotionally f*****g with you, and I want you to know there's so much going on behind closed doors, and he is so lucky I'm not in that house. He has been dimming your light."
Shaken by these revelations, Rhianna indicated she was considering leaving the house. She and Omar subsequently agreed to give each other some space. The series has become the most complained-about in ITV history, with over 8,000 viewers raising concerns about problematic scenes.
In addition to the Ofcom complaints, the charity Women's Aid issued a statement calling Omar's behavior "worrying" and urged for his removal from the house. Omar's actions that drew criticism included scolding Rhianna for discussing their arguments with other housemates and using phrases such as "don't talk about me," "don't cry," "don't look away from me," "sort yourself out," and "fix up."
Earlier in the week, Big Brother had spoken to Omar about his language and behavior. "Omar, Big Brother wants to speak to you about some of your language and behaviour in the house," the show's producers stated. "Big Brother wants to bring to your attention that at times, it appears that you are dismissing your fellow housemates' feelings and experiences, and not acknowledging the impact such behaviour could have on your fellow housemates and the viewing public."
Omar responded to Big Brother, claiming he had "only ever looked out for and cared for Rhianna" and had "done nothing but try to accommodate her and be there for her and care for her." He added that he had "acknowledged my housemate's feelings" and had "never dismissed a housemate's feelings."
Big Brother cautioned Omar to "always be mindful of the impact your language and behaviour can have on others." Viewers expressed disappointment with the intervention, deeming it too vague and not specific enough to address Omar's alleged controlling behavior.
Omar's interaction with Rhianna after the diary room session also drew commentary. He asked Rhianna if he had controlled or limited her, to which she responded that she did not feel controlled. Omar stated he was upset by her discussing their issues with other housemates, leading Rhianna to express feeling like she had done something wrong. Omar concluded the conversation by apologizing "if for whatever reason I have made you feel upset."
The 7,138 Ofcom complaints related to Omar's treatment of Rhianna place this incident among the top ten most complained-about moments in Big Brother history, and the third highest for a single incident.
