Big Brother Faces Scrutiny Over "Coercive Control" Portrayal
Women's Aid criticizes the show for allegedly normalizing abusive behavior, as viewers demand action against a contestant.

The reality television show Big Brother is facing criticism from the charity Women's Aid, which alleges the program is "presenting abuse as a form of entertainment." The concerns stem from a recent episode featuring housemates Omar and Rhianna, where viewers expressed distress over Omar's behavior towards Rhianna.
During an argument aired on Monday, Rhianna told Omar she wanted to end their relationship, citing his manner of speaking to her. The situation escalated when Omar warned Rhianna not to discuss him with other housemates. A subsequent exchange in the storeroom led to Rhianna becoming tearful, prompting intervention from Big Brother, who called her to the Diary Room. Other housemates also reportedly commented on the relationship being "unhealthy."
Despite Omar and Rhianna appearing to reconcile later that night, viewers took to social media platform X to call for Omar's removal from the show, with many describing his actions as "toxic" and "scary."
Women's Aid released a statement detailing their concerns, noting they had been contacted by viewers expressing similar anxieties. Veronica Oakeshott, Head of External Affairs at Women's Aid, stated that "coercive control creates invisible chains and a sense of fear that impacts every element of a survivor's life." She added that it is "worrying to see behaviours like this being given a platform in popular media like Big Brother." The charity emphasized the risk of minimizing survivors' experiences and presenting abuse as entertainment.
"We must do better to call out and reject abuse as soon as we see it, so women and children can learn the signs and themselves feel confident in speaking up and seeking safety," Oakeshott said, urging television producers to understand their responsibility for contestants' safety and to engage with experts to better protect participants. Women's Aid has offered to discuss their concerns with the Big Brother team.
Viewer comments on X echoed calls for Omar's removal, with some labelling his behavior as "emotionally abusive" and warning that such actions are "very common among abusers." One viewer stated, "If Big Brother doesn't remove Omar from the house, I'm not watching anymore his behaviour is disgusting." Influencer Dean McCullough also reportedly described Omar's treatment of Rhianna as "abusive and toxic."
Earlier in the series, Rhianna had confided in housemate Yasmin about feeling confused and "like I've constantly been doing something wrong" due to Omar's behavior. Following their storeroom argument, Omar was heard telling a crying Rhianna to "not cry" and "look at me, don't look away from me."
The Daily Mail has reached out to a representative for ITV, the broadcaster of Big Brother, for comment.
