Big Brother Faces Over 500 Ofcom Complaints After Heated Housemate Confrontation
Regulatory body receives complaints alleging racism and bullying following a dispute between contestants Johanne and Rochelle.
The reality television show Big Brother has garnered over 500 complaints to broadcasting regulator Ofcom, primarily stemming from an intense argument between housemates Johanne and Rochelle. The majority of these complaints, totaling 493, were reportedly lodged in relation to the episode aired on September 27.
Viewers cited concerns of alleged racism and bullying directed at Rochelle, with specific comments made by Johanne highlighted. The row originated after Rochelle overheard Johanne and another housemate, Pauline, discussing microaggressions. Johanne appeared to suggest that Rochelle's reaction to a previous incident – Johanne reheating chicken Rochelle had cooked – was a microaggression. Johanne questioned whether Rochelle would have reacted similarly if another housemate, Rhianna, had been involved, implying that Rochelle's response was racially motivated.
Rochelle, upon hearing her name mentioned, discussed the conversation with fellow housemates Rhianna, Lynx, and Omar, stating that Pauline and Johanne had suggested she and Rhianna were racist and microaggressive. This account was later challenged by housemate Yasmin, who attempted to clarify the situation.
The dispute escalated when Johanne learned Rochelle had discussed the conversation with other housemates. The two confronted each other in the kitchen, where Johanne denied having said anything about Rhianna and proceeded to call Rochelle "stupid, dumb and a troublemaker." The exchange turned acrimonious, with Rochelle responding with expletives and Johanne calling her "trashy."
Big Brother intervened by calling Johanne to the Diary Room. This was not the first instance of viewer dissatisfaction; the report also noted 91 complaints from the September 21 episode, which also involved allegations of racial comments and remarks related to nationality made by Johanne and Omar.
Big Brother airs on ITV2 and streams on ITVX. ITV has been approached for comment. The show has been airing for three weeks, with tensions reportedly high since the housemates first entered.
