Big Brother Faces Over 1,600 Ofcom Complaints Amidst House Drama

The reality television show "Big Brother" has recorded 1,654 complaints to Ofcom within a single week, primarily stemming from intense arguments and confrontations among contestants in the ITV house. The complaints span incidents reported between September 30 and October 5.

A significant portion of these complaints, 1,191, were lodged after the September 30 episode. This was largely in response to a nominations task that led to a heated exchange between housemates Johanne and Rochelle. While Johanne received a formal warning from "Big Brother" for her "tone and body language," viewers perceived Rochelle's behavior as comparable but unaddressed, leading to accusations of inconsistent handling of contestant conduct.

Another substantial block of complaints, totaling 191, arose from the October 4 episode, which featured a "House of Revelations" segment. These complaints centered on allegations of bullying directed towards a housemate identified as Twinks.

Earlier in the week, the September 27 episode generated 122 complaints. A majority of these raised concerns about alleged racism and bullying directed at Rochelle by other housemates, including specific remarks made by Johanne. Following Johanne's eviction on Friday, an additional 97 complaints were filed, relating to the treatment of both Johanne and Rochelle around the time of the eviction, including accusations of racism and bullying.

The show, which returned to screens three weeks prior to the complaint surge, has been characterized by frequent drama and has seen producers intervene multiple times. A notable incident involved housemate Pauline being removed from the bedroom after a verbal altercation with Rochelle. This argument followed comments Pauline made about newcomer Catrin, which left Catrin visibly upset. The exchange escalated, with Pauline reportedly yelling at Catrin, who was in tears in the bedroom. Rochelle then confronted Pauline about her actions, leading to a significant clash between the two.

Viewer reactions to these events have been divided, with online discussions highlighting varied opinions on the contestants' behavior and the show's moderation. Some viewers expressed support for Rochelle's intervention, while others criticized her actions. The face-to-face nominations preceding these events reportedly resulted in the series' highest overnight viewership since its 2024 launch episode. Excluding ITVX streaming, the show garnered an average of 787,000 viewers on ITV2, marking a 77% increase compared to the same episode in 2025. The series has seen a year-on-year increase of 17% in viewership, with the 16-34 demographic up by 45% compared to 2025 episodes. To date, the series has accumulated 22 million streams.
